
Historical Context
In fall of 2008, Dr. Radtke, President of PSC created a Sustainability Task Force. The group was charged with gathering data and making recommendations that will make PSC a leader in promoting the advancement of sustainability goals within the College’s instructional programs, practices and facilities. Promoting and improving recycling and waste reduction on campus is a function of the group (Prairie State College Waste Reduction Plan—January 2010 Update)
Definition: A deliberate process that embodies "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (national center for sustainability—www.ncsustainability.com)
Objectives:
- Model environmental stewardship and accountability in the community
- Incorporate sustainability into the teaching and learning environment in support of PSC mission
- Reduce energy costs
- Attract external funding for curriculum support and sustainable operations
- Reduce carbon footprint
- Encourage personal/individual stewardship and accountability
- Require our business partners to honor our sustainability position
- Provide outreach to our district
Sustainability Task Force Membership
The task force is led by Vice Presidents Dempsey (Finance and Administration) and Atewologun (Academic Affairs). To ensure adequate focus on the major goals of the task force, membership is subdivided into three sub-committees:
- Curriculum development
- Facilities and projects
- Social responsibility (community outreach and communication)
