Protégé Program
The Protégé Program is a premier program at Prairie State College which addresses the issues facing collegiate minority males in the areas of enrollment, retention, and graduation. The Protégé Program will assist African American men in developing a more complete understanding of their responsibilities as college students and in being productive members of society.
Through a federal grant, recently awarded to PSC, aimed at supporting predominately black institutions, the Protégé Program is now able to loan textbooks and other supplies to its members, as well as visit other universities to learn about transfer requirements and scholarship opportunities.
The Protégé Program is a proud member of the South Metropolitan Higher Education Consortium (SMHEC) Brother2Brother regional initiative between 17 member schools including two- and four-year institutions and selected feeder high schools. Students participate in campus and regional events designed to promote positive brotherhood, and encourage persistence in college. One such event is the African American male networking event, called the Ties that Bind or Knot: Strengthening Ties Between African American Men.
