Department of Campus and Public Safety

Welcome

Prairie State College Police and Campus and Public Safety

Campus safety and security is coordinated by the Prairie State College Police Department and the Department of Campus and Public Safety. The department is located in Room 1100 of the main campus building. Satellite offices are also located in the Health Tech building and the Adult Training and Outreach Center of the College.

In August of 2008, Prairie State College added a police department. Sworn in were Norman Martin, director, campus and public safety and chief of police, and Samuel Pavesich and Al Thompson, police officers. The police department provides additional tools to keep the college community safe as well as the officers responding. In the event of an emergency, Prairie State College Police can now provide an immediate response and are trained and equipped to handle situations that were previously referred to the Chicago Heights Police Department.

Campus and Public Safety Officers are empowered by the College (as provided by 110 Illinois Compiled Statues 805/3-42.1) to enforce both criminal laws and College regulations. The main College campus and its satellite facility are located in areas with highly trained police and fire departments, equipped to handle any emergency. If a major or serious crime occurs at any sponsored event, the police from the affected jurisdiction will be summoned. The department operates in cooperation with other municipal, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.

The Department is staffed by 20 full- and part-time officers operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All full-time Campus and Public Safety Officers have completed state approved training as provided by the Illinois Private Security Act of 1993. All police officers completed the training required by the State of Illinois.

For more information about the department, contact Norman Martin, director of campus and public safety, chief of police.
