POSITION SUMMARY:

Under minimal supervision, performs clerical and laboratory manager functions. Responsibilities include setting up and taking down laboratory exercises; sterilizing media; disposing of wastes; monitoring such equipment as refrigerators, freezers, autoclaves, incubators and waterbaths; and maintaining inventory of lab supplies and equipment including plants and animals. Works closely with the coordinator to meet faculty members' needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Orders, inventories, and maintains proper levels of all laboratory supplies and equipment. Communicates with vendors and sales representatives and prepares proper documentation for all orders, including those requiring bids.
  2. Sets up and takes down laboratory equipment to ensure smooth running lab sessions. Checks equipment for correct calibration and function and responds promptly to laboratory shortages and technical problems.
  3. Keeps inventory of laboratory equipment, including microscopes, autoclaves, incubators, and etc.
  4. Schedules equipment maintenance and repair.
  5. Maintains the department's inventory of teaching materials and makes them available to faculty members on request.
  6. Keeps track of packing slips, invoices; material safety data sheets (MSDS), standard laboratory instructions, and instrument operation manuals so they are available on request.
  7. Performs general clerical tasks, including data entry, answering phone calls, and copying laboratory documents.
  8. Makes media and maintains bacterial and fungal cultures.
  9. Cares for laboratory plants and non-IACUC animals.
  10. Trains part-time lab assistants and work study students in lab safety and in the preparation, use and operation of lab equipment.
  11. Maintains a clean working environment including sterilizing and disposing of contaminated wastes and removal of preserved specimens. Provides a safe working environment in accordance with OSHA regulations.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Performs other duties as assigned and within the scope of this position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High school degree or equivalent.
  2. Laboratory experience, including ability to operate sterilization equipment, dispose of contaminated wastes and maintain an inventory of supplies.
  3. Ability to organize and perform a variety of tasks with minimal supervision.
  4. Excellent interpersonal skills.
  5. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Associate's degree in science or a B.A. or B.S. degree.
  2. Minimum one year related laboratory experience.
  3. Experience with OSHA regulations.
