Position Description - Faculty

Lead Information Literacy Librarian/Public Services

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

To provide professional reference service, instruction and collection development for students, faculty, and staff of the College, in support of programs, courses, and the information needs of the College community.

OVERALL PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND OBLIGATIONS:

Librarians are expected to fulfill professional workload responsibilities of thirty-five (35) hours per week and, as per the Faculty Federation/Board of Trustees collective bargaining contract, Librarians are required to work no more than seven (7) hours per day. These normal workload responsibilities are exclusive of any teaching assignment unless the affected Librarian and supervisor mutually agree as to how the teaching duties shall be equated for purposes of determining workload.

Librarians fulfill additional professional obligations and commitments within or outside of the thirty-five hour workload for professional contributions to the College and in accordance with the Librarian's interests and abilities.

REPORTING AND SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIP(S):

Direct reporting relationship to the Dean of the Library.

SPECIALTY AREAS:

Librarians have an assigned specialty area and related functions as provided below and as affecting the degree and extent of commitment to overall workload responsibilities and professional obligations as follows:

Lead Information Literacy Librarian/Public Services: Provides critical evaluation and specific skills to complete assignments and prepare individuals for effective life-long use of information.

DISTINGUISHING RESPONSIBILITIES:

Workload and Professional Obligations:

Employs ALA Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education to lead the library’s classroom and online instruction programs.

Leads, conducts, and implements information literacy planning and assessment activities.

Works with faculty members to revise and improve library instruction class content and delivery methods.

Collaborates with others and work individually to produce and maintain a variety of informational and instructional materials.

Maintains instructional data, statistics, policies, and procedures and prepares periodic reports related to the assessment of student learning.

Integrates library resources and services into course management, hybrid and other online learning initiatives.

Maintains reference desk hours, including some evening hours.

Participates and serves on committees and task forces of the College.

Attends college-wide convocations and participates in Commencement and other academic events and ceremonies.

Assists in the development and implementation of the College’s mission, goals and strategic plan.

Professional Commitments:

Maintains a current understanding of information technologies and applications appropriate to this library environment.

Provides advice and support to student clubs and organizations and for other activities that help promote student involvement.

Participates in public and community service activities.

Participates in the professional advancement of the discipline and in professional growth and development opportunities.

Upholds the ethical standards and principles particular to the library, and contributes toward the advancement of the College.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. ALA accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science.
  2. Strong oral, written and computer skills and a service orientation.
  3. Ability to work and interact well with diverse students, faculty and staff.
  4. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Experience in reference, collection management and Information Literacy instruction in an electronic classroom environment.
  2. Community College Library experience.
  3. Experience with web page development.
  4. Experience with Consortia catalogs/databases.
