Teaching at Prairie State College

PSC faculty is very strong and diverse.

We take teaching seriously at Prairie State College (PSC) and give our professors the resources and support they need.

Located in a suburb about 30 miles south of Chicago, PSC is a community college that serves more than 5,000 students a semester in credit and non-credit classes. We have a strong baccalaureate transfer program with lower-division courses in many disciplines and an equally solid career division with programs in allied health and nursing, dental hygiene, information technology and industrial technology. We also have a strong adult education program that provides ABE, GED, ESL and literacy courses to the residents of our district.

The state of Illinois is divided into community college districts, and Prairie State is the most diverse—ethnically, racially and socio-economically—district in the state. Included in our district are three upper middle class suburbs as well as the poorest suburb in the United States. What distinguishes our College from many others is that we are truly multicultural and multi-racial. About 51% of our students are African-American, 12% are Hispanic, 2% are Asian and the remainder are white. Our community is fiercely committed to diversity and determined to preserve our wonderful racial and ethnic mix. The College plays a key role in this effort.

Our faculty is very strong and diverse. Long before other colleges discovered the importance of diversifying their faculty, PSC attracted a number of African-American and Hispanic professors who liked both the College and the community, and who also loved our proximity to Chicago. Unfortunately, many of our faculty members, including some who have been with the College for over thirty years, are now retiring.

We are eagerly seeking new faculty members to take their places. We believe this is a great community to live in and a wonderful place for faculty members whose focus is teaching and whose goal is to make a difference in students' lives.

The Teaching & Learning Center is the campus hub for faculty development.

This eight-station facility with state-of-the-art technology was developed to support faculty members who are developing initiatives in outcomes assessment, learning communities, service learning and writing across the curriculum. There, professors can learn the latest software, in small groups or tutorials, and develop their own materials.
