KRILICH SELECTED TO NJCAA ALL-AMERICA TEAM
Sophomore outside hitter Samantha Krilich (T.F. South H.S.) of the Prairie State College volleyball team made school history when she was named as an NJCAA second-team All-American. Krilich is the first PSC student-athlete in any sport to earn All-America honors.

In addition to being an All-American, Krilich also made the NJCAA All-Region IV and All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference first teams this season. She was picked to the region and conference all-tournament teams and was MVP of the Prairie State Tournament as well. Furthermore, Krilich was chosen as the NJCAA National Player of the Week on Sept. 20.

As a freshman, Krilich was an all-conference first-team performer and a member of the academic all-conference team.

Krilich etched her name in the school record book this fall after tallying 555 kills and a 4.41 kills-per-set average, which is the second-highest clip in the country. Krilich, whose 1,008 career kills are a Pioneer record as well, also produced a team-best .344 hitting percentage - No. 2 on Prairie State’s all-time single-season list - 491 digs, 61 blocks and 60 aces.

PSC concluded the season with a 36-8 overall record and nearly advanced to the nationals but lost in the Region Tournament finals in five sets.

FIVE PIONEERS RECEIVE POSTSEASON AWARDS
Five sophomores on the Prairie State College volleyball team received postseason awards after leading the Pioneers to their most successful season in the program’s four-year history.

Outside hitter Samantha Krilich (T.F. South H.S.) and setter Colleen Gentile (T.F. North H.S.) were both unanimous picks to the NJCAA All-Region IV and the All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference first teams. As a result of their ranking in the region, Krilich and Gentile have been nominated for All-America honors.

Middle hitter Porsche West (Crete-Monee H.S.) also made the all-conference first team, while libero Erin Conroy (Bremen H.S.) and outside hitter Stephanie Carlson (Sonshine H.S., Ind.) were second-team All-ISCC selections.

Krilich finished the year with a school-record 555 kills and a 4.41 kills-per-set average, which is the second-highest total in the country. Krilich, whose 1,008 career kills are a PSC record as well, also contributed a team-high .344 hitting percentage - No. 2 on Prairie State’s all-time single-season list - 491 digs, 61 blocks and 60 aces.

Likewise, Gentile established several Pioneer records this fall, including most assists in a match (55 vs. College of Lake County), season (1,209) and career (2,042). She placed second on the team with 546 digs, third with 64 blocks and fourth with 51 aces.

West is 27th in the national standings with a 1.30 blocks-per-set average. She registered 171 blocks this year and 286 in her two seasons at PSC to author a pair of school records. West also published a Prairie State record when she tallied 14 blocks in the season finale against McHenry County College.

Along with her blocking, West was one of the Pioneers’ leading hitters, finishing second on the team with 290 kills and a .309 hitting percentage.

Conroy was PSC’s top back-row player in 2009, collecting a team-record 652 digs and matching the school’s all-time single-season best with 95 aces. On Prairie State’s career charts, Conroy is first with 171 aces and second with 907 digs.

Furthermore, Conroy, No. 22 nationally with a 5.01 digs-per-set average, set a school record when she served 15 aces against Olive-Harvey College in October.

Carlson’s highlights this year include ranking second among the Pioneers with 65 aces and tallying 199 kills, 391 digs and 32 blocks.

PSC concluded the year with a 36-8 record and narrowly advanced to the NJCAA Championship but came up short in the NJCAA Region IV Tournament finals, where it lost in five sets. Prairie State also took second in both the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference standings and the conference tournament.

PRAIRIE STATE NEARLY WINS REGION TOURNAMENT
Included among the list of goals the Prairie State College volleyball team set prior to the 2009 season were to win 37 matches and advance to the NJCAA Championship.

The Pioneers came up just short in reaching those milestones as they were defeated by McHenry Country College 27-25, 25-21, 16-25, 20-25, 15-8 in the Region IV Tournament finals on Saturday in Grayslake to see their season come to an end with an impressive 36-8 record. If PSC would have claimed a fifth-set victory against McHenry, it would have qualified for the national tournament for the first time in the program’s four-year history.

The six Prairie State sophomores on the roster - outside hitter Tamara Gibbs (Rich South H.S.), middle hitter Porsche West (Crete-Monee H.S.), libero Erin Conroy (Bremen H.S.), setter Colleen Gentile (T.F. North H.S.), outside hitter Samantha Krilich (T.F. South H.S.) and outside hitter Stephanie Carlson (Sonshine H.S., Ind.) - produced a 74-19 overall record in their two-year stints (38-11 record in 2008). This group also finished second in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Tournaments both seasons in addition to placing second in the ISCC regular-season standings this fall.

Prior to the McHenry match, the Pioneers defeated Kankakee Community College 25-16, 25-21, 25-22 Saturday morning in a semifinals match.

Krilich had 12 kills, a .440 hitting percentage, 14 digs and three blocks in the KCC win. Other highlights included Gentile’s 31 assists and 13 digs, Carlson’s 14 digs and three aces, Conroy’s 16 digs and West’s seven blocks.

After losing the first two sets to McHenry, Prairie State rallied with a pair of wins to force a fifth set, which the Scots took control of early when they scored three consecutive points.

West established a school record in the match as she recorded 14 blocks, surpassing the previous mark of 12, which she set last year against Kankakee.

Krilich was once again PSC’s leading hitter as she finished with 23 kills to go along with her 14 digs and four blocks. Conroy topped the defense with 29 digs, while Gentile contributed 42 assists, 22 digs and seven blocks.

West, Krilich, Gentile and Conroy were all selected to the All-Region IV Tournament team for their performances in the two matches.

In addition to qualifying to the national tournament, a win over McHenry also would have given head coach Scott Sheets his 100th career win at Prairie State (99-53).

PSC SWEEPS MORTON ONCE AGAIN; ADVANCES TO REGION SEMIFINALS
With the exception of a 1-1 tie in the second set, the Prairie State College volleyball team led from start to finish in its 25-13, 25-16, 25-9 victory over Morton College in an NJCAA Region IV Tournament quarterfinal match Wednesday in Chicago Heights.

PSC, which has swept Morton three times this season, advances to the semifinals Saturday at College of Lake County in Grayslake, where it will face Kankakee Community College.  The Pioneers and Kankakee split a pair of matches this fall.

The region finals will be played Saturday as well, with the champion earning an automatic berth to the NJCAA National Championship.

The Pioneers, 35-7 for the season, were never threatened in the Morton match, scoring the first seven points in the first set and the first nine in the finale.  With set two tied 1-1, Prairie State scored four straight to take a 5-1 advantage and pull away for good.

In its most dominating performance of the year, the Prairie State College volleyball team steam rolled over Olive-Harvey College 25-4, 25-3, 25-4 Thursday in Chicago to close out the regular season with an impressive 34-7 record.

The Pioneers will begin its quest for a Region IV Tournament title, which would enable them to advance to the NJCAA Championship, on Wednesday when it plays host to Morton College. PSC is 2-0 against Morton this fall, winning 25-9, 25-10 Sept. 19 and 25-9, 25-8, 25-3 Oct. 13

In the Olive-Harvey victory, Prairie State served 29 aces to establish a school record. In addition, the Pioneers hit a season-high .605.

Sophomore Erin Conroy (Bremen H.S.) inked her name into the school record book once again as she accounted for 15 aces. She held the previous record of 12 aces, which also came against Olive-Harvey in a 2008 match. Along with her serving, Conroy topped PSC with 12 digs.

Freshman middle hitter Madeleine Radtke (Lakeshore H.S., Mich.) totaled eight aces, which equal the fifth most in team history. She contributed six kills and a .714 hitting efficiency as well.

Sophomore outside hitter Samantha Krilich (T.F. South H.S.) was Prairie State’s leading hitter, finishing with eight kills and a .800 hitting percentage. Freshman opposite Brooke Spell (Wilmington H.S.) recorded five kills and hit at a .714 clip.

PRAIRIE STATE PLACES SECOND AT CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
It was only fitting that the Prairie State College volleyball team and McHenry County College squared off in the championship round of the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Tournament on Sunday at College of Lake County in Grayslake.

During the conference campaign, the Pioneers placed second in the ISCC standings with a 6-1 mark, suffering their lone setback to 7-0 McHenry in a four-set affair.  PSC and the Scots continued their winning ways in the opening round of the tournament Saturday as they both posted 3-0 pool-play records.  They then won a crossover match Sunday to set the stage for the finals.

As was the case during the season, McHenry walked away victorious, defeating Prairie State 25-19, 25-23, 25-15.  This marks the second consecutive season that the McHenry has downed the Pioneers for the league title.

With the 4-0 start to the tournament, PSC extended its winning streak to a school-record 16 victories.  Overall, Prairie State is 33-7 for the season.

On Saturday, the Pioneers defeated Waubonsee Community College 25-14, 25-14; Oakton Community College 25-11, 24-26, 15-8; and Moraine Valley Community College 25-14, 25-18 to win its four-team pool.
