SEVEN PSC PLAYERS RECEIVE POSTSEASON AWARDS
Despite being a first-year program with a roster comprised solely of freshmen, seven Prairie State College women’s soccer players received postseason honors.
Goalkeeper TaraAnn Spell (Wilmington H.S.), forward Nicolle Trujillo (Bloom H.S.) and defender Alanna Dominguez (Beecher H.S.) were chosen to both the All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference and NJCAA All-Region IV teams.
Midfielder Nicole Daley (Beecher H.S.), defender Kelly Meredith (Rich East H.S.), defender Bianca Cox (Rich South H.S.) and defender Sophia Miranda (Bloom Trail H.S.) each earned all-conference honorable mention accolades.
Spell was voted by the conference coaches as the top goaltender in the league. In addition to her first-team status in the ISCC, she was all-region second team after allowing a clip of 3.04 goals per game. Spell, who will also play basketball at PSC this winter, stopped an average of 9.5 shots each contest.
Trujillo led the Pioneers in scoring, finishing with eight goals and 16 points en route to claiming All-ISCC first team and all-region honorable mention plaudits.
Dominguez, who scored one goal during the year, was honorable mention all-conference and second-team all-region. She also ranked as Prairie State’s best defender.
Daley had one goal and one assist to place second on the team with three points.
PSC was 1-13 for the season.

PRAIRIE STATE’S SEASON COMES TO AN END
The 2009 season came to a close for the Prairie State College women’s soccer team Thursday when the Pioneers dropped a 1-0 decision to Carl Sandburg College in the opening round of the NJCAA Region IV Tournament in Chicago Heights.
After a scoreless first half, the Chargers tallied the game’s lone goal in the 56th minute.
Freshman goalkeeper TaraAnn Spell (Wilmington H.S.) totaled nine saves for PSC.
Prairie State, which concluded the season with a 1-13 record, will have a strong nucleus next year as all 16 players on the current roster are freshmen, including forward Nicolle Trujillo (Bloom H.S.), who scored a team-high eight goals this campaign.

PIONEERS COME UP SHORT AGAINST DALEY
Freshman forward Nicolle Trujillo’s (Bloom H.S.) goal in the 83rd minute pulled the Prairie State College women’s soccer team into a 1-1 tie with Daley College, but the Bulldogs scored 1:12 later to win 2-1 Tuesday afternoon in Chicago Heights.
After a scoreless first half, Daley jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute. It would stay that way until Trujillo knocked in her team-high ninth goal of the season, which was set up off of a corner kick pass from freshman defender Nicole Daley (Beecher H.S.).
With the setback, the Pioneers closed out the regular season with a 1-12 record. Prairie State will open NJCAA Region IV Tournament play on Oct. 22.

PSC PLAYS WELL AGAINST REGION LEADER
If there is such thing as a moral victory, the Prairie State College women’s soccer team experienced one Monday.
The Pioneers, a first-season program, played one of its better games of the year despite losing to Waubonsee Community College 3-0 in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference finale in Sugar Grove. WCC, the No. 2 team in the Skyway standings (3-0-2), is ranked first among 10 teams in the NJCAA Region IV poll.
PSC (1-11, 0-5) fell behind 3-0 in the first half but blanked the hosts in the final 45 minutes.

PRAIRIE STATE SUFFERS DEFEATS TO MORTON AND SOUTH SUBURBAN
Back-to-back losses to Morton College and South Suburban College dropped the Prairie State College women’s soccer team’s season record to 1-10.
The Pioneers suffered a 4-0 defeat to Morton on Wednesday in Chicago Heights before falling 8-0 at South Suburban on Thursday.
After surrendering three goals in the first 31 minutes against Morton, the Pioneers held the guests to just one marker in the final 59 minutes. Freshman goalkeeper TaraAnn Spell (Wilmington H.S.) recorded 14 saves.
Spell, along with two others, were sidelined for the South Suburban game due to injury.

PSC DROPS 2-0 DECISION ONCE AGAIN
For the second time in as many games, the Prairie State College women’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision as it lost to Oakton Community College in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference game Wednesday in Chicago Heights after an identical outcome versus Joliet Junior College on Monday.
Freshman forward Nicolle Trujillo (Bloom H.S.) had PSC’s lone shot on goal in the game, while freshman goalkeeper TaraAnn Spell (Wilmington H.S.) anchored a strong defensive effort by recording 11 saves.
The Pioneers slipped to 1-8 overall and 0-4 in the conference with the loss.

PIONEERS FALL 2-0 TO JOLIET
In one of its better defensive efforts of the year, the Prairie State College women’s soccer team allowed just two goals to Joliet Junior College, but the Pioneers’ offense was unable to crack the scoring column en route to a 2-0 loss Monday in Joliet.
The Wolves scored in the 11th and 87th minutes to account for the offensive production.
Freshman goalkeeper TaraAnn Spell (Wilmington H.S.) had eight saves for PSC (1-7), which generated three shots on goal in the contest.

PRAIRIE STATE CAN’T POST SECOND-CONSECUTIVE WIN
One day after a dominating 9-0 victory, the Prairie State College women’s soccer team was handed a 5-0 Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference setback by College of Lake County on Monday in Grayslake.
CLC scored four goals in the first half and one in the second to account for the scoring.
Freshman forward Nicolle Trujillo (Bloom H.S.), who scored seven times in Sunday’s win against Truman College, nearly picked up a pair of goals against Lake County but was denied in her bid.
The loss moves PSC to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

PSC WINS FIRST GAME OF SEASON; TRUJILLO SCORES SEVEN GOALS
There were several “season firsts” recorded by the Prairie State College women’s soccer team against Truman College on Sunday in Chicago Heights. Most notably, the Pioneers won their first game of the season - 9-0 - in addition to tallying their first goal of the campaign and posting their first shutout.
Freshman forward Nicolle Trujillo (Bloom H.S.) led the PSC (1-5) offense with seven goals. Freshmen defenders Alanna Dominguez (Beecher H.S.) and Nicole Daley (Beecher H.S.) accounted for the other two goals.
Daley also had an assist, as did freshman midfielder Reema Kansara (Rich East H.S.), freshman defender Ashley Heath (Rich East H.S.) and freshman midfielder Marissa Oliver (Beecher H.S.).
On the defensive end, meanwhile, freshman goalkeeper TaraAnn Spell (Wilmington H.S.) totaled three saves en route to registering the shutout.
Trujillo opened the scoring in the second minute and made it 2-0 at the 4:15 mark. Dominguez scored 2:23 later before Trujillo upped the margin to 5-0 after she connected in the 20th and 21st minutes.
The score would stay 5-0 until the 65th minute when Trujillo struck for the fifth time. Her sixth goal came in the 77th minute. After Daley made it 8-0 in the 82nd minute, Trujillo knocked in the finale with 46 seconds remaining.

PIONEERS ALLOW FOUR GOALS AFTER SCORELESS FIRST HALF
After a scoreless first half, the Prairie State College women’s soccer team surrendered four goals in the final 45 minutes to suffer a 4-0 setback to Elgin Community College in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference contest Wednesday afternoon in Chicago Heights..
Freshman goalkeeper TaraAnn Spell (Wilmington H.S.) stopped a season-high 19 shots, including a penalty kick, to keep the Pioneers close.
With the loss, PSC drops to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

FIRST VICTORY CONTINUES TO ELUDE PSC
Still in search of its first victory of the year, the Prairie State College women’s soccer team lost a 3-0 decision to Carl Sandburg College on Saturday in Galesburg.
The hosts grabbed a 2-0 first-half lead and tacked on the final goal in the second period.
Despite not cracking the scoring column, PSC (0-4) had a season-high five shots on goal.

PRAIRIE STATE IMPROVES IN SECOND HALF BUT FALLS TO 0-3
Second-half adjustments enabled the Prairie State College women’s soccer team to put up a better showing on both on the offensive and defensive ends of the field, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Pioneers were defeated 7-0 by Triton College on Saturday in River Grove.
In the first period, PSC (0-3) allowed five goals and generated no shots on net. After some personnel changes were made at the half, Prairie State yielded just two markers in the final 45 minutes while placing four shots on goal.
The Pioneers will resume play next Saturday at Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg.

PIONEERS DEFEATED IN CONFERENCE SHOWDOWN
With a roster stocked solely with freshmen, the Prairie State College women’s soccer program, which is competing for the first time in six years, is going to experience some growing pains this fall.
That was the case Wednesday when the Pioneers lost 6-0 to Moraine Valley Community College in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference opener in Palos Hills
Moraine Valley scored three first-half goals and tallied its remaining three markers in the fianl 14 minutes of the contest.
PSC moved to 0-2 on the season with the setback.

PSC FALLS 1-0 IN SEASON OPENER
Defense dominated the Prairie State College women’s soccer team’s 2009 season opener as the Pioneers and South Suburban College combined for just one goal Friday afternoon in Chicago Heights. Unfortunately for PSC, the goal belonged to the Bulldogs, who scored in the 62nd minute to claim a 1-0 victory.
Freshman goalkeeeper TaraAnn Spell (Wilmington H.S.) recorded 15 saves for Prairie State, which fielded its first women’s soccer team in six years.
Along with Spell, freshmen Nicolle Trujillo (Bloom H.S.), Alanna Dominguez (Beecher H.S.), Reema Kansara (Rich East H.S.), Nicole Daley (Beecher H.S.), Jessica Walker (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.), Sophia Miranda (Bloom Trail H.S.), Marissa Oliver (Beecher H.S.), Bianca Cox (Rich South H.S.), Kaitlin Damiani (Bloom H.S.), Kelly Meredith (Rich East H.S.), Martha Garcia (Bloom H.S.), Ashley Heath (Rich Eat H.S.) and Flor Garcia (Bloom H.S.) made their collegiate debuts Friday.

WOMEN’S SOCCER TEAM TO HOST TRYOUT
The Prairie State College women’s soccer team will host a tryout Tuesday, Aug. 4 at 10 a.m. on the soccer field, which is located on the Pioneer Recreation and Sports Park.
All participants must have a physical and be enrolled full-time for the fall semester.
David Spataru will serve as the head coach.
