SHABTAY AND AVISROR SIGN WITH VALPARAISO
Sophomores Guy Shabtay (Ramat-Gan, Israel) and Lior Avisror (Yehud, Israel) of the Prairie State College men’s soccer team will continue their athletic and academic careers at Valparaiso University next fall after both signed a National Letter of Intent with the NCAA Division I school on Wednesday.
In his two-year stint at PSC, Shabtay was selected to the All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference first team twice and the NJCAA All-Region IV first team this past fall. Shabtay ranked as the top forward in Region IV in 2009, enabling him to be nominated for All-America honors.
Shabtay produced 29 goals, seven assists and 65 points in his two seasons with the Pioneers. He topped the 2009 Prairie State team with 19 goals and 42 points, while also distributing four assists. As a freshman, Shabtay totaled 10 goals, three assists and 23 points.
Led by Shabtay, PSC owned a combined 24-14-1 record in 2008 (11-6-1) and 2009 (13-8-0), which is the best two-year mark in the program’s history
Avisror played the 2009 season with the Pioneers after competing at Columbia College (Mo.) as a freshman. Avisror, Prairie State’s top defender, earned All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference first-team accolades in the fall after registering one goal and one assist.
Shabtay and Avisror are the first two Prairie State student-athletes who have signed a Letter of Intent with an NCAA Division I college.

PIONEERS RECOGNIZED AFTER SUCCESSFUL SEASON
Ten Prairie State College men’s soccer players received postseason awards as a result of their accomplishments this fall.
Headlining the list was sophomore forward Guy Shabtay (Ramat-Gan, Israel), who was the lone Pioneer voted to both the NJCAA All-Region IV and All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference first teams. Shabtay, an NJCAA All-America nominee, ranked as the top forward in the region after leading PSC with 19 goals and 42 points.
Sophomore defender Lior Avisror (Yehud, Israel) and freshman midfielder Ruben Ortega (Bremen H.S.) were each selected to the All-ISCC first team and All-Region IV second team. Avisror, Prairie State’s best defender, tallied one goal and one assist, while Ortega had three goals and a team-high 12 assists.
Honorable-mention status in the region and conference went to freshman forward Tomer Sirma (Jerusalem, Israel), freshman forward Josh Techeira (Bremen H.S.), sophomore midfielder Seth Arriaga (Rich South H.S.), freshman midfielder Armando Lopez (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.), freshman defender Peter Tamale (Bloom H.S.) and freshman goalkeeper Mick Goulding (Bremen H.S.).
Freshman midfielder Ayuba Adeniyi (Bloom H.S.), meanwhile, was honorable mention all-region.
Sirma was second among the Pioneers in goals (12), assists (7) and points (31), and Techeira was third in each of those categories (9 goals, 6 assists, 24 points). Arriaga totaled three goals, four assists and 10 points to place just ahead of Lopez, who compiled three goals, two assists and eight points. Tamale recorded five assists and Adeniyi had one.
Goulding owned a 1.05 goals-against average in 13 outings. He authored four shutouts and split the goaltending duties in two additional whitewashes.
PSC finished the year with a 13-8 overall record and 4-3 mark in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference.

PRAIRIE STATE’S SEASON ENDS WITH REGION LOSS
When the Prairie State College men's soccer team played host to Oakton Community College on Sept. 15, OCC claimed a 1-0 victory. History repeated itself Saturday in Northbrook as the Raiders once again held on for a 1-0 win in an NJCAA Region IV Tournament game, putting an end to the Pioneers' highly-successful season.
PSC closed out the year with a 13-8 overall record and a 4-3 mark in Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference play. Six of Prairie State’s 13 wins were shutouts.

PSC WINS REGION TOURNAMENT OPENER; ADVANCES TO QUARTERFINALS
Each of the 14 men’s soccer teams competing in the NJCAA Region IV Tournament have the same goal - win the title and advance to the Great Lakes District Championship, which is the final step before moving on to the nationals.
Prairie State College successfully completed its first task in its quest, defeating College of Lake County 2-0 in the opening round Wednesday in Grayslake.
The Pioneers (13-7), seeded fifth in their pool, travel to No. 1 Oakton Commun ity College on Saturday for a quarterfinal contest. Oakton defeated PSC 1-0 in the lone meeting this season.
In the win over No. 4 CLC, sophomore midfielder Seth Arriaga (Rich South H.S.) broke a scoreless tie with his goal in the 67th minute. Sophomore forward Guy Shabtay (Ramat-Gan, Israel) then knocked in his team-leading 19th goal with seven minutes remaining.
Freshman midfielder Ruben Ortega (Bremen H.S.) and freshman forward Josh Techeira (Bremen H.S.) both had an assist.
Freshman goalkeeper Mick Goulding (Bremen H.S.) stopped five shots en route to posting his second consecutive shutout.

PIONEERS FINISH REGULAR SEASON WITH 13-0 VICTORY
Saving the best for last, the Prairie State College men's soccer team closed out the regular season with its most dominating performance of the year - a 13-0 pasting of Milwaukee Area Technical College on Saturday in Milwaukee.
Eleven players contributed goals and/or assists to the Pioneers' most prolific offensive showing of the campaign.
PSC (12-7), winner of four of its last five games, looks to continue its winning ways in the NJCAA Region IV Tournament, which begins Wednesday. The tournament pairings will be announced Monday evening.
Freshman forward Tomer Sirma (Jerusalem, Israel) led the Prairie State offense Saturday with
five goals and one assist. Sirma, who did all of his scoring in the first 40 minutes, tallied four goals and one assist between the sixth and 21st minutes.
Sophomore forward Guy Shabtay (Ramat-Gan, Israel) and freshman forward David Guzman (Bogan H.S.) both had one goal and three assists, while freshman forward Josh Techeira (Bremen H.S.) contributed one goal and one assist.
Scoring one goal apiece were freshman midfielder/goalkeeper Anthony Narcisi (Bloom H.S.), sophomore midfielder Russ Franczyk (Beecher H.S.), sophomore midfielder Ryan Franczyk (Beecher H.S.), freshman midfielder Armando Lopez (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) and sophomore defender Lior Avisror (Yehud, Israel).
Freshman midfielder Ruben Ortega's (Bremen H.S.) two assists and freshman Ayuba Adeniyi’s (Bloom H.S.) one assist closed out the scoring.
Freshman goalkeeper Mick Goulding (Bremen H.S.) and Narcisi combined to give the Pioneers their fifth shutout of the year. Goulding had four saves in 75 minutes before giving way to Narcisi, who had two stops in the final 15 minutes.
PSC scored nine goals in the first half and four in the second en route to reaching double-digits for the first time this season.

SHABTAY SCORES FOUR GOALS IN PSC VICTORY
In a span of less than 14 minutes, sophomore forward Guy Shabtay (Ramat-Gan, Israel) scored four goals, sparking the Prairie State College men’s soccer team to a 6-4 victory over Daley College in the Pioneers’ regular-season finale Tuesday in Chicago Heights.
Shabtay, ranked 10th in the country with 35 points (17 points, 1 assist), opened his offensive surge in the 11th minute to give PSC a 1-0 lead. After Daley struck twice in a 34-second span, Shabtay, who totaled five goals in a game last year, deadlocked the score in the 14th minute. He then added goals in the 16th and 25th minutes to make it 4-2.
Freshman forward Tomer Sirma (Jerusalem, Israel) accounted for Prairie State’s last two goals in the 36th and 88th minutes. His final marker came after the Bulldogs cut the deficit to 5-4.
Along with his two goals, Sirma also had an assist. Sophomore midfielder Seth Arriaga (Rich South H.S.) and freshman forward Josh Techeira (Bremen H.S.) each supplied two assists, while freshman midfielder Ruben Orterga (Bremen H.S.) and sophomore defender Lior Avisror (Yehud, Israel) added one apiece.

PRAIRIE STATE CAN’T EXTEND WINNING STREAK
It looked as if the Prairie State College men’s soccer team was getting back to its early-season form after winning its last two games by a combined nine goals (outscored the opposition 11-2). But PSC, which opened the season with an 8-1 record before dropping five straight, took a step back Saturday, losing 3-1 at Kishwaukee College in Malta to see its record slip to 10-7.
Freshman forward Ruben Ortega (Bremen H.S.) accounted for the Pioneers’ lone goal when he connected on a free kick to tie the game at 1-1 in the 39th minute.
The Kougars, however, closed out the scoring with goals in the 60th and 75th minutes to win by two.

PSC FINISHES CONFERENCE SEASON WITH 4-3 RECORD
By virtue of its 2-1 victory over College of Lake County on Tuesday in Grayslake, the Prairie State College men’s soccer team concluded the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference campaign with a 4-3 record, placing it fourth among eight schools in the standings.
The Pioneers, who have had a winning record in conference play in each of the last three seasons, improved their overall mark to 9-6. They can finish no worse than .500 for the year.
Sophomore forward Guy Shabtay (Ramat-Gan, Israel) gave PSC a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute. After the Lancers evened it up at 1-1, Shabtay knocked in the game winner in the 77th minute.
Freshman forward David Guzman (Bogan H.S.) and freshman midfielder Ruben Ortega (Bremen H.S.) each had an assist.
After missing the last eight games due to injury, freshman goalkeeper Mick Goulding (Bremen H.S.) made his return and totaled three saves.

PIONEERS END LOSING STREAK WITH EIGHT-GOAL VICTORY
Victorious in eight of its first nine games of the season, the Prairie State College men’s soccer team was establishing itself as a leading contender for both the NJCAA Region IV and Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference crowns. The Pioneers, however, encountered a difficult stretch that resulted in five consecutive losses, which dropped their season record to 8-6.
After falling 6-0 at College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn on Friday, Prairie State got back in the win column Saturday, trouncing Kennedy-King 9-1 in Chicago Heights. The nine goals are the most by the Pioneers this season, while the eight-goal victory margin equals their largest of the year (defeated Carl Sandburg College 8-0).
Freshman forwards Tomer Sirma (Jerusalem, Israel) and David Guzman (Bogan H.S.) both recorded a hat trick to lead the offensive onslaught. Sirma also added another point with an assist.
Freshman forward Josh Techeira (Bremen H.S.) scored two goals, and freshman midfielder Ruben Ortega (Bremen H.S.) supplied a pair of assists.
Sophomore midfielder Ruslan Kovtunenko (Jerusalem, Israel) contributed one goal and one assist. Freshman defenders Peter Tamale (Bloom H.S.) and Josh Roels (Bloom H.S.) each tallied an assist.
Freshman goalkeeper Anthoiny Narcisi (Bloom H.S.) stopped five shots en route to the win.
Prairie State (9-6) didn’t waste much time getting its offense on track as Techeira opened the scoring in the second minute. After Kovtunenko made it 2-0 in the ninth minute, Sirma netted three consecutive goals between the 44th and 51st minutes. Guzman knocked in the next two goals before Techeira tallied his second of the game in the 84th minute. One minute later, Guzman completed his three-goal performance.

PRAIRIE STATE COMES UP SHORT AGAINST MORTON
A three-game scoreless streak for the Prairie State College men’s soccer team came to a halt Tuesday, but it wasn’t enough to lead the Pioneers to a victory as they were defeated 2-1 to Morton College in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference clash in Chicago Heights.
The Panthers opened the scoring in the 63rd minute when they converted on a penalty kick, and they increased their advantage to 2-0 five minutes later. Sophomore forward Guy Shabtay (Ramat-Gan, Israel), however, cut the deficit in half when he scored on freshman forward David Guzman’s (Bogan H.S.) assist with seven minutes remaining.
In a game dominated by the defenses, Prairie State totaled just four shots on goal while Morton had six.

PSC DROPS TWO GAMES IN MISSOURI
The first two contests in what is arguably the toughest four-game stretch of the year for the Prairie State College men's soccer team were played over the weekend in Missouri.
The Pioneers dropped both decisions, losing 4-0 to East Central College on Saturday in Union, Mo., and 4-0 to undefeated Jefferson Community College (11-0 record) the following day in Hillsboro, Mo.
PSC’s (8-4) schedule doesn't get any easier as it hosts Morton College, the first-place team in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (4-0 ISCC record), on Tuesday before traveling to College of DuPage, ranked first in the most recent NJCAA Region IV poll, Friday.

PIONEERS DEFEATED BY MCHENRY IN CONFERENCE GAME
Despite owning an 8-1 overall record and a 3-1 mark in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference heading into Tuesday’s game, the Prairie State College men’s soccer team lost 2-0 to McHenry County College, which was 2-3-1 on the season, including 0-3 in league play.
McHenry scored in the 32nd and 57th minutes en route to the victory in Crystal Lake.
With the loss, PSC dropped to fourth in the eight-team ISCC standings.

PRAIRIE STATE WINS AGAIN IN OVERTIME
For the second time in as many games, the Prairie State College men’s soccer team produced an overtime victory as it defeated Truman College 2-1 Sunday afternoon in Chicago Heights.
The Pioneers, who beat South Suburban 4-3 in an extra session Thursday, registered the winning goal 5:21 into overtime when sophomore midfielder Ruslan Kovtunenko’s (Jerusalem, Israel) 30-yard free kick skipped past the goalkeeper.
Truman took a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute, but sophomore forward Guy Shabtay (Ramat-Gan, Israel) tied it 6:04 later on an unassisted goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Anthony Narcisi (Bloom H.S.) had five saves in the victory, which upped PSC’s season record to 8-1.

PSC DEFEATS SOUTH SUBURBAN IN OVERTIME
What was shaping up to be an easy win for the Prairie State College men’s soccer team turned out to be anything but that as the Pioneers held on for a 4-3 overtime victory over South Suburban College on Thursday in Chicago Heights.
PSC (7-1) scored three first-half goals before the guests tacked on three of their own in the second period to force overtime. Eight minutes into the extra session, freshman midfielder Ruben Ortega (Bremen H.S.) netted the game-winning goal after receiving a pass from freshman forward Tomer Sirma (Jerusalem, Israel). Sirma also had an assist on Prairie State’s second goal of the game.
Freshman forward Josh Techeira (Bremen H.S.) opened the scoring in the
24th minute, and sophomore forward Guy Shabtay (Ramat-Gan, Israel) made it 2-0 10 minutes later. Shabtay added his second goal of the game in the 39th minute.
Freshman defender Peter Tamale (Bloom H.S.) had two assists, while
sophomore midfielder Ruslan Kovtunenko (Jerusalem, Israel) tallied one.

PIONEERS LOSE FIRST GAME OF SEASON
After winning its first six games of the season, the Prairie State College men’s soccer team suffered its first defeat Tuesday, falling 1-0 to Oakton Community College in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference game in Chicago Heights.
The loss also dropped the Pioneers out of first place in the league standings as they slipped to 3-1.
Oakton scored the lone goal of the game in the 10th minute.

PRAIRIE STATE UPS RECORD TO 6-0 AFTER SHUTOUT
Showing no signs of a letdown, the Prairie State College men’s soccer team shut out Carl Sandburg College 8-0 Saturday afternoon in Galesburg to improve to 6-0 on the season.
PSC, which established its season high for goals in a game in the victory, have outscored the opposition 24-3 this year. The Pioneers also have posted four shutouts.
Sophomore forward Guy Shabtay (Ramat-Gan, Israel) authored his first hat trick of the year and the second of his career to lead the offense. Scoring two goals apiece were freshman midfielder Armando Lopez (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) and freshman forward David Guzman (Bogan H.S.).

PSC SCORES THREE STRAIGHT GOALS IN VICTORY
Three unanswered goals by the Prairie State College men’s soccer team enabled it to capture a 3-1 decision over Kankakee Community College on Thursday in Chicago Heights.
Kankakee scored 20 seconds into the game to grab an early lead and give the Pioneers their first deficit of the year. But PSC, which improved to 5-0 on the season, scored the final three goals of the contest to win by two.
Freshman forward Josh Techeira (Bremen H.S.) deadlocked the game in the 13th minute when he knocked in his fourth goal of the campaign. Sophomore midfielder Solomon Adufah (Rich Central H.S.), who was making his season debut, had the assist.
The game would remain tied until the 65th minute when sophomore midfielder Ruslan Kovtunenko (Jerusalem, Israel) scored on freshman forward Tomer Sirma’s (Jerusalem, Israel) assist. Sophomore midfielder Seth Arriaga (Rich South H.S.) converted a penalty kick with four minutes to play to extend the difference to 3-1.

PIONEERS REMAIN UNBEATEN AFTER POSTING THIRD SHUTOUT
The winning ways continue for the Prairie State College men's soccer team, which defeated Elgin Community College 1-0 Tuesday in Elgin to improve to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference.
Sophomore forward Guy Shabtay (Ramat-Gan, Israel) scored the lone goal of the game in the 71st minute. Sophomore midfielder Seth Arriaga (Rich South H.S.) and freshman forward Josh Techeira (Bremen H.S.) combined for the assist.
Shabtay is tied for 16th in the country in scoring with nine points (4 goals, 1 assist), while Techeira is deadlocked at the No. 24 slot with eight (3 goals, 2 assists).
Freshman goalkeeper Mick Goulding (Bremen H.S.) had two saves to post the team’s third shutout of the year. In the process, he lowered his goals-against average to 0.54.

PRAIRIE STATE IMPROVES TO 2-0 IN CONFERENCE
A point-blank save by freshman goalkeeper Mick Goulding (Bremen H.S.) on a three-yard shot in the final seconds coupled with his stop on a penalty kick enabled the Prairie State College men’s soccer team to hold on for a 3-2 victory over Moraine Valley Community College in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference game Friday in Palos Hills.
With the triumph, PSC is 3-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Freshman midfielder Ruben Ortega (Bremen H.S.) gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute when he scored on a free kick. Freshman forward Tomer Sirma’s (Jerusalem, Israel) goal extended the difference to 2-0 in the 37th minute. Sophomore midfielder Ruslan Kovtunenko (Jerusalem, Israel) was credited with the assist.
Moraine Valley sliced the lead in half in the 67th minute, but Sirma answered two minutes later with his second goal of the game, which was set up by sophomore forward Guy Shabtay’s (Ramat-Gan, Israel) pass.
The Cyclones once again responded with a goal in the 71st minute to make it 3-2. However, the Pioneers’ defense blanked the hosts the remainder of the game.
Goulding totaled five saves in the win.

PSC BLANKS WAUBONSEE IN LEAGUE OPENER
Winning the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference title is one of the Prairie State College men’s soccer team’s goals for the 2009 campaign. The Pioneers got off to a promising start in their quest, defeating Waubonsee Community College 6-0 in the league opener Tuesday in Chicago Heights.
PSC (2-0), which has outscored the opposition 9-0 in its first two games, received two goals and an assist from freshman forward Josh Techeira (Bremen H.S.). Sophomore forward Guy Shabtay (Ramat-Gan, Israel) also knocked in a pair of goals.
Sophomore midfielder Ruslan Kovtunenko (Jerusalem, Israel) had one goal and one assist, and freshman forward David Guzman (Bogan H.S.) finished with a goal. Freshman midfielder Armando Lopez (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) and freshman forward Tomer Sirma (Jerusalem, Israel) both recorded an assist.
Freshmen goalkeepers Mick Goulding (Bremen H.S.) and Anthony Narcisi (Bloom H.S.) played 65 and 25 minutes, respectively, en route to the shutout. Both players registered a save.

PIONEERS RECORD SHUTOUT IN SEASON-OPENING VICTORY
In an impressive start to the 2009 season, the Prairie State College men’s soccer team coasted to a 3-0 shutout victory over Springfield College on Saturday in Springfield.
Sophomore forward Guy Shabtay (Ramat-Gan, Israel) connected on the first goal of the campaign in the 22nd minute after receiving a pass from freshman midfielder Armando Lopez (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.). The Pioneers didn’t wait long to add to their advantage as freshman forward Josh Techeira (Bremen H.S.) scored on an assist from sophomore defender Carlos Mendoza (Washington H.S.) two minutes later.
Sophomore pos Seth Arriaga (Rich South H.S.) closed out the scoring when he converted a free kick in the 31st minute.
Freshman goalkeeper Mick Goulding (Bremen H.S.) had two saves en route to posting a shutout in his collegiate debut.
