DUPAGE ENDS SEASON FOR PSC
GLEN ELLYN, Ill. --- Despite trailing by only two goals at halftime, the Prairie State College men’s soccer team was unable to advance to the NJCAA Region IV Semifinals Saturday, falling 7-1 to DuPage in a quarterfinal match.
The Pioneers, who closed out the season with an overall record of 11-9, were primed and ready for another big win following a 2-1 overtime triumph against McHenry in first-round action Oct. 19.
PSC got off on the wrong foot early as DuPage notched a tally just 11 seconds into the match. The Chaparrals found the back of the net again two minutes later for a 2-0 lead.
Prairie State cut the advantage to 2-1 in the 20th minute when sophomore midfielder Alex Jaramillo (Lincoln-Way North H.S.) blasted a penalty kick past the DuPage goalkeeper.
PSC freshman keeper Victor Lozano (East Chicago Central H.S., Ind.), despite the seven goals, made eight stops in the match and turned in another strong performance.

HAYO-HAMO ENTERS LATE, LIFTS PSC TO PLAYOFF TRIUMPH
Hampered by a lower leg injury for the past week, Prairie State College sophomore midfielder Yarin Hayo-Hamo (HaRishonim H.S., Israel) answered his team’s call to duty late and didn’t disappoint.
Hayo-Hamo’s converted penalty kick in the third minute of overtime Wednesday lifted the Pioneers (11-8) to a 2-1 overtime victory over McHenry, following an NJCAA Region IV first round playoff game in a windy, chilly Chicago Heights.
The 5-foot-9 Hayo-Hamo’s tally marked his team-leading 13th of the campaign. He did not enter the contest until the overtime period had begun.
PSC will now travel to DuPage for a quarterfinal match Saturday (noon).
The Pioneers opened the scoring in the 28th minute when freshman forward Subomi Oguntoyinbo (Hedingham School, England) flicked in a quick pass from sophomore midfielder Sultan Anifowoshe (Hillcrest H.S.) during a scrum in front of the McHenry goal.
PSC held the 1-0 lead through halftime before the Fighting Scots notched the equalizer in the 83rd minute courtesy of a penalty kick goal of their own.
Prairie State freshman goalkeeper Victor Lozano (East Chicago Central H.S.) made seven stops in 93 minutes of action.
Lozano nearly prevented overtime just prior to the game-tying marker when he stopped McHenry’s initial penalty kick attempt with an athletic, full-extension dive and block. Unfortunately, Lozano was ruled over the goal-line and the play was whistled a re-kick.
Lozano also made another diving block of a point-blank shot in the 63rd minute.

DALEY DOWNS PIONEERS AT HOME
With an injury-depleted bench forcing all of its players to carry a heavier load, the Prairie State College men’s soccer team, despite a strong effort, dropped a 3-2 contest to Daley Saturday in Chicago Heights.
The Pioneers (10-8) played tough throughout the match, their last of the regular season.
Both of PSC’s tallies on the day came from unlikely sources.
Prairie State opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when sophomore defender Sultan Anifowoshe (Hillcrest H.S.) took a cross from freshman forward Stefan Zindovic (XV Belgrade H.S., Serbia) and flicked it with his head past the Daley goalkeeper.
Anifowoshe’s marker was the first of his collegiate career.
Daley registered the equalizer in the 29th.
PSC tied the match 2-2 in the 64th minute when freshman midfielder (CMS Grammar School, Nigeria) also notched his first career goal following a long, hooking blast that caught the top corner of the net.
Daley tallied the game-winner in the 82nd minute.
PSC keeper Victor Lozano (East Chicago Central H.S., Ind.) made six saves in the match.
The Pioneers now enter NJCAA Region IV Tournament play.

SHORT-HANDED PIONEERS FALL TO LAKE COUNTY ON ROAD
GRAYSLAKE, Ill. --- Despite a determined 12-save effort from freshman goalkeeper Victor Lozano (East Chicago Central H.S., Ind.) an injury-plagued Prairie State College men’s soccer team was unable to post a victory over Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference opponent Lake County Tuesday, falling to the Lancers 7-1 in Grays Lake.
Prairie State (10-7, 5-2) was forced to sit seven impact players during the match due to various injuries.
The 5-foot-9, 210-pound Lozano made several athletic stops throughout the match and prevented the final score from being much more lopsided than it was.
The Pioneers received their lone goal in the 15th minute when sophomore midfielder Alex Jaramillo (Lincoln-Way North H.S.) accepted a pass from freshman forward Stefan Zindovic (XV Belgrade H.S., Serbia) and rifled it into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season.
The Pioneers will be in action again on Saturday when they square off against local foe Daley at the Pioneer Athletic Park (noon).

LATE GOALS SINK PIONEERS
Despite a ferocious, all-out, 90-minute battle against local rival South Suburban, the Prairie State College men’s soccer team was upended by the Bulldogs 4-2 Thursday in Chicago Heights.
Prairie State (10-6) hung in the game for the majority of the contest before a pair of late second-half goals put the contest out of reach.
The Pioneers opened the scoring in the 12th minute when sophomore midfielder Yarin Hayo-Hamo (HaRishonim H.S., Israel) worked his way through a host of South Suburban defenders before flicking a bullet into the corner of the netting for his team-leading 12th goal and 31st point of the year.
The Bulldogs would tie the match in the 39th minute and took the lead in the 50th. PSC would knot the contest in the 70th minute when Hayo-Hamo used his strong passing skills to find freshman forward Stefan Zindovic (XV Belgrade H.S.). Zindovic used the opportunity to record his 12 goal of the season as well, ripping an unstoppable shot, just feet in front of the South Suburban goalkeeper.
Hayo Hammo’s pass was his 32nd point and eighth assist of the year.
South Suburban took a 3-2 lead in the 73rd and closed the scoring with a tally in the 81st.
Prairie State freshman keeper Victor Lozano (East Chicago Central H.S., Ind.) made nine saves in the match.

OGUNTOYINBO, ZINDOVIC DOUBLE UP TO DOWN MORTON
When it comes to entertaining Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference rivalries on the soccer pitch, the one between Prairie State College and Morton is certainly a “must-see”.
Tuesday’s installment of the annual clash, as usual, didn’t disappoint.
The Pioneers (10-5, 5-1) remained in a first-place tie with Oakton (15 points apiece) atop the league standings, courtesy of a dramatic 5-3 triumph in Chicago Heights.
“Any time you get a conference win and a region win in the same game, it’s huge,” PSC head coach David Spataru said. “Of course any time you beat a team like Morton, it’s also big.”
Thanks to the big win, PSC remains in a first-place tie atop the league standings (15 points) with Oakton.
Prairie State picked up a pair of two-goal efforts from freshman forwards Stefan Zindovic (XV Belgrade H.S., Serbia) and Subomi Oguntoyinbo (Hedingham School, England).
Zindovic opened the scoring for PSC in the eighth minute when he accepted a feed from sophomore midfielder Alex Jaramillo (Lincoln-Way North H.S.) and ripped it into the back of the net for his 10th goal of the season.
PSC established a 2-0 lead in the 29th minute when sophomore midfielder Yarin Hayo-Hamo (HaRishonim H.S., Israel) found Oguntoyinbo, who in turn blasted a rocket past the Morton keeper.
The Panthers cut the lead to 2-1 in the 43rd minute.
Morton used their new-found momentum to knot the match in the 63rd minute.
A Hayo-Hamo converted penalty kick in the 67th gave PSC a short-lived 3-2 advantage before the Panthers roared back to deadlock the match again four minutes later.
The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Oguntoyinbo recorded the game-winner in the 75th when Zindovic found him wide open from 20 meters out. Oguntoyinbo promptly rifled the ball into the corner of the net.
Zindovic provided an insurance tally in the 83rd following another penalty kick to close the scoring.
Lost in the back-and-forth action of the match was the performance of freshman goalkeeper Victor Lozano (East Chicago Central H.S., Ind.). Lozano made 12 stops in the match, several of which came at point-blank range.
The 5-foot-9, 210-pound Lozano also prevented Morton from drawing first-blood in the game’s opening minutes when he dove to deflect a rocket directly in front of the net.
The Pioneers will be in action again on Thursday when they host local rival South Suburban at 4 p.m.

Despite a ferocious second-half effort Thursday, the Prairie State College men’s soccer team dropped a non-conference match with visiting Truman, 3-2 in Chicago Heights.
The Pioneers (9-4), despite the score, received a strong performance from goalkeeper Victor Lozano (East Chicago Central H.S.). The 5-foot-9, 210-pound net minder stopped 10 shots in the match, many of which came courtesy of breakaways.
The Pioneers found themselves down 2-0 at halftime.
Freshman forward Stefan Zindovic (XV Belgrade H.S., Serbia) put PSC on the board in the 50th minute when he took a pass from freshman forward Seamus Byrne (De La Salle College, Ireland) and redirected it with his head.
After Truman tallied to make it a 3-2 game, sophomore midfielder Alex Jaramillo (Lincoln-Way North H.S.) took advantage of a Truman defensive lapse and blasted an unassisted, wide-open shot past the keeper in the 76th minute.
PSC will take to the pitch again on Saturday (Oct. 1) when they visit Kishwaukee (1 p.m.).

OAKTON GETS BEST OF PIONEERS
The Prairie State College men’s soccer team came into Tuesday afternoon’s Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference match against league front-runner Oakton with high hopes of handing the Raiders their first setback in league play.

LOZANO CLAIMS NATIONAL GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK HONORS

The crown jewel of Lozano’s efforts for the week was a 2-0 victory over conference rival Waubonsee on September 6. In that match, Lozano turned away all five of the shots he faced.
In Prairie State’s 12-2 triumph over Malcolm X on September 10, Lozano stopped three of five shots.
“Victor earned a shutout in a very important game for us,” PSC head coach David Spataru said. “He played the full 90 minutes in that game and played very well.”

PIONEERS TAKE DOWN MORAINE VALLEY
PALOS HILLS, Ill. --- As is typically the case, Prairie State College’s Tuesday afternoon Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference match against local foe Moraine Valley was competitive from the opening whistle to the closing horn.
