PRAIRIE STATE CONCLUDES SEASON AT REGION TOURNAMENT
In his final outing as a member of the Prairie State College men’s golf team, sophomore Jacob
Mendez (Portage H.S., Ind.) shot a team-best 254 in the three-round NJCAA Region IV Tournament, which was held Thursday through Saturday in Byron.

Mendez recorded a season-best 79 in the opening round Thursday. After scoring a 90 Friday, he finished with an 85 Saturday.

Mendez edged freshmen Cody Staton (Bloom Trail H.S.) and Landon Lukasik (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) in the team standings as the former totaled a 256 (80, 91, 85) and the latter a 257 (86, 89, 82). Staton’s 80 on Friday was his top effort of the year.

Freshman Jim Fransen (Marist H.S.) had a 296 (97, 101, 98), resulting in PSC’s team score of 1063.

Prairie State placed ninth among 10 schools.

Along with having nearly identical scores at the Region IV meet, Mendez, Lukasik and Staton assembled similar averages for the entire year. In 16 rounds, Mendez averaged 86.7, Lukasik 86.9 and Staton 87.6. Lukasik, who authored three sub-80 rounds, had the best showing by a Pioneer this season when he fired a 77 on Sept. 23.

LUKASIK LEADS PSC AFTER ANOTHER STRONG OUTING
For the third time this season, freshman Landon Lukasik (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) of the Prairie State College men’s golf team has recorded a score in the 70s as he had a 79 at the PrairieView Invitational on Friday in Byron.

Lukasik, the lone Pioneer this season to author a sub-80 round, also produced a 77 and 78 during the campaign. Friday’s performance also marks the fifth time in 11 meets that he has posted the team’s best score.

Freshman Cody Staton (Bloom Trail H.S.) compiled an 86, while sophomore Jacob Mendez (Portage H.S., Ind.) and freshman Jim Fransen (Marist H.S.) shot a 94 and 95, respectively.

PSC finished with a team score of 354 to rank 16th among 17 schools.

PIONEERS CLOSE OUT CONFERENCE SEASON AT OAKTON
As was the case in four of the first five Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference meets this season, the Prairie State College men’s golf team finished fifth out of six schools in the ISCC finale hosted by Oakton Community College on Wednesday.

PSC, which had a team score of 356, was led by sophomore Jacob Mendez’s (Portage H.S., Ind.) round of 85, which was one stroke better than freshman Cody Staton’s (Bloom Trail H.S.) 86.

Freshman Landon Lukasik (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) tallied a 90, while freshman Jim Fransen (Marist H.S.) had a 95.

The Pioneers will compete at the PrairieView Invitational (Oct. 2) and the Region IV Championship (Oct. 8-10) to close out the 2009 campaign.

LUKASIK HAS CAREER DAY AT LAKE COUNTY
Along with recording the best score of the year by a Prairie State College men’s golfer, freshman Landon Lukasik (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) also tied for second among 27 participants at the College of Lake County’s Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference meet Wednesday after shooting a 77.

Lukasik, who previously recorded a 78 on Sept. 14, finished three strokes behind the medalist.

Sophomore Jacob Mendez (Portage H.S., Ind.) was second on the team with an 81, while freshman Cody Staton (Bloom Trail H.S.) tallied an 84. Freshman Jim Fransen (Marist H.S.) had a 100.

The Pioneers produced a team score of 342 - their second-lowest round of the year - to place fifth out of six schools.

PRAIRIE STATE PLACES FIFTH AT ELGIN
Sophomore Jacob Mendez (Portage H.S., Ind.) paced the Prairie State College men’s golf team with a round of 83 Monday at an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference meet hosted by Elgin Community College.

With the 83, Mendez has either led or tied for the team-best score in six of the Pioneers’ 10 rounds this year.

Freshman Landon Lukasik (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) notched a 94, and freshmen Cody Staton (Bloom Trail H.S.) and Jim Fransen (Marist H.S.) both shot a 96.

PSC ranked fifth among six schools with a team score of 369.

PSC HAS BEST ROUND OF THE YEAR AT ILLINOIS VALLEY
After a below-average start at the Illinois Valley Community College Invitational on Friday, the Prairie State College men’s golf team ended the two-day, 36-hole tournament with a season-best round of 334 Saturday.

The 334, coupled with Friday’s 361, gave the Pioneers a total score of 695, which placed them 16th among 17 schools.

Freshman Landon Lukasik (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) topped the PSC with a 166 (85, 81). His round of 81 Saturday was his second-best effort of the year.

Sophomore Jacob Mendez (Portage H.S., Ind.) had a 172 (91, 81), and freshman Cody Staton (Bloom Trail H.S.) shot a 176 (90, 86).

Freshman Jim Fransen (Marist H.S.) produced a season-low 86 in the final round en route to producing a 181 (95, 86) overall.

STATON SHOOTS TEAM BEST AT WAUBONSEE
Led by freshman Cody Staton’s (Bloom Trail H.S.) round of 85, the Prairie State College golf team recorded a 366 to finish fourth among six Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference schools at Waubonsee Community College’s league meet Wednesday.

Freshman Landon Lukasik (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) followed with an 88, while sophomore Jacob Mendez (Portage H.S., Ind.) added a 95. Freshman Jim Fransen (Marist H.S.) recorded a 98.

PIONEERS RECORD BEST TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL SCORES OF THE YEAR
From both a team and individual perspective, the Prairie State College golfers had their best round of the year Monday at Deer Creek Golf Course in Crete.

The Pioneers, who played host to the six-team Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference meet, tallied a season-low 344 to place fifth in the standings. The 344 was nine strokes better than PSC’s previous best.

Freshman Landon Lukasik (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) finished in a three-way tie for second after shooting a 78, which was one stroke behind the medalist. Lukasik’s round also marks the first time this season that a PSC golfer produced a score in the 70s.

Along with Lukasik, freshman Cody Staton (Bloom Trail H.S.) also established a personal record as he shot an 83. Sophomore Jacob Mendez (Portage H.S., Ind.) had an 83 as well.

Freshman Jim Fransen’s (Marist H.S.) 100 concluded the scoring.

MENDEZ LEADS PRAIRIE STATE AT DUANE CHANEY INVITATIONAL
Without question, sophomore Jacob Mendez (Portage H.S., Ind.) of the Prairie State College men’s golf team enjoys playing in the Duane Chaney Invitational at the Byron Hills Golf Course. Last fall, Mendez shot a career-best 79 at the event, and he came within one stroke of equaling that feat Friday after compiling a season-low 80. The 80 is the top score by a Pioneer this season.

Freshmen Landon Lukasik (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) and Cody Staton (Bloom Trail H.S.) were separated by one shot after the former totaled an 89 and the latter a 90. Lukasik’s 89 matched his best performance of the year.

Freshman Jim Fransen (Marist H.S.) recorded a 97.

PSC placed 21st out of 22 teams with a team score of 357.

PSC PRODUCES SEASON-BEST SCORE AT SAUK VALLEY
Three of the four Prairie State College men’s golfers recorded their season-best scores at the Sauk Valley Community College Skyhawk Invitational on Friday in Sterling to enable the Pioneers to produce their top team total of the year.

Sophomore Jacob Mendez (Portage H.S., Ind.) shot an 86, which is PSC’s lowest individual tally this campaign. Freshmen Cody Staton (Bloom Trail H.S.) and Jim Fransen (Marist H.S.) also established personal records as they both compiled an 88. Freshman Landon Lukasik (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) concluded the scoring with a 91.

Fransen, who had never scored better than a 108 before Friday, showed the most progress among the quartet. Fransen helped key Prairie State’s 353 team score, a 26-shot improvement over its previous best outing.

PIONEERS EARN NO. 5 FINISH IN CONFERENCE OPENER
In the first of six Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference meets, the Prairie State College golf team placed fifth among six schools after shooting a 379 Monday at Water’s Edge Golf Club in Worth.

Freshmen Landon Lukasik (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) and Cody Staton (Bloom Trail H.S.) both shot an 89 to tie for team-best honors. Sophomore Jacob Mendez (Portage H.S., Ind.) tallied a 92, and freshman Jim Fransen (Marist H.S.) had a 109.

The 379 team score represents the Pioneers’ best round of the season.

PRAIRIE STATE OPENS SEASON AT HIGHLAND INVITATIONAL
Twenty teams, including Prairie State College, opened the 2009 golf season at the Highland Community College Invitational on Friday at Park Hills Golf Course in Freeport.

The Pioneers finished 19th at the 36-hole event, compiling a team score of 777.  Black Hawk College took first-place honors after tallying a 600.

Sophomore Jacob Mendez (Portage H.S., Ind.) and freshman Cody Staton (Bloom Trail H.S.) each fired a 182.  Both players recorded a 93 for the first round and an 89 for the final 18 holes.

Freshmen Landon Lukasik (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) and Jim Fransen (Marist H.S.) contributed a 193 and 220, respectively.
